City Look Forward to the challenge of the Sydenhams Wessex League
City's inaugural Sydenhams Wessex League campaign kicks off on the 16th August with a visit to Thatcham Town. Thatcham have been consistent performers over the years so it promises to be a testing opening day of the season.

This season, match reports will generally appear on the Monday following a weekend fixture, with midweek reports being published - generally - two days after the game, so check back regularly for the (probably) biased views on games from our erstwhile reporters!

We play host to Alton Town on Tuesday 19th August at 7-30pm at the Denplan City Ground in a Wessex League fixture originally scheduled to be away. Unfortunately, Alton have work to do on their pitch, hence the change. As a fellow Support Local Sport Club, we hope that they get things sorted out without too much disruption to their campaign.

In the meantime, don't forget to book the 30th August in the diary - City are re- appearing in the FA Cup after a long absence - away at Banstead Athletic. After the fun of our FA Vase trips last season, the Club hopes to get the same support again and, we are reliably informed, Terry Bone has been tuning up his singing voice at the Fame Academy! God help Banstead!

The Club is running a number of coaches to the game, so book now by calling Terry or Lyn Bone.

Only minor changes to City's playing staff for the new season
City have only made a few changes to the squad that took the Hampshire Premier League title last season - with Manager Neil Hards "quietly confident" that he has the players already on board to be competitive as the Club moves up the Pyramid.

On the departure front, we have said "au revoir" to a number of players who have served the Club fantastically for a number of years, including Russell Vowles who joined the band of ex-City players at Stockbridge, Tim Kidney one of the few remaining survivors from the merger, Jason Ahmet who has gone to AFC Totton, Steve Beeks has joined the coaching staff at Farnborough Town and James Kirby who has gone to Bemerton Heath.

It is very difficult to keep everyone happy at any football club, particularly when we have such a large number of very good players and we wish everyone who has moved on the very best of luck and thank them for their efforts and, of course, they will be welcome back at any time.

Incoming, we are delighted to welcome Mike Dean from Weymouth who will be playing alongside his fellow ex-AFC Bournemouth player, Dan Smith, and Sean Dyke from Windsor & Eton. We are also pleased to have signed Ollie Rastell who has returned from forays in America to challenge Darren Crowfoot and Scott Jacobs for the Keepers shirt.

Pre-Season bodes well
City's pre-season performances have left manager, Neil Hards quietly optimistic for the forthcoming Sydenham's Wessex League campaign. With victories over Dr Marten's sides, Weymouth, Newport IOW and Salisbury City and a draw against Cirencester Town, the squad seem to have carried on from where they left off last season - despite the disappointment of losing out to Eastleigh in the Hampshire Chronicle Cup.

Hards commented: "We have taken pre-season pretty seriously as we know that the Wessex League is going to be tough this year. There are a lot of good sides around and, particularly after our run in the FA Vase last season, teams are going to be trying that much harder against us. We have also taken the opportunity to throw a few of our Academy players in to give them a taste and they have done exceptionally well. We have a good squad of players and we are looking forward to the challenge and we have the added bonus of the FA Cup this season to motivate the players even more. So, fingers crossed!"

Denplan sign up as City's Main Sponsors
The Club is delighted to announce the signing of a three-year sponsorship deal with Denplan, the leading UK dental insurer, and one of Winchester's largest companies.

City Chairman, Richard Newsome and Denplan Chief Executive, Stephen Gates both welcomed the new wide-ranging arrangements, which further extend Denplan's commitment to supporting community-orientated activities in the City. Denplan's sponsorship will see the City Ground re-named as the Denplan City Ground and Denplan's logo on the First Team shirts.

A clearly delighted City Chairman said: "Having Denplan on-board gives us a great platform to continue the Club's progress over the next few years. As a Company, they share our views on how the Club can serve the local Community and we will be working closely together to create one of the best footballing resources in the south - from the First Team down to the grass roots".

Thanks must also go to City's new Honorary Vice-President, Winchester's MP, Mark Oaten for his support in attracting Denplan.

Mark Oaten becomes an Honorary Vice-President
The Club is delighted to announce that Mark Oaten, the Member of Parliament for Winchester has accepted the invitation to become an Honorary Vice-President. Mark is a keen football follower (despite being a Watford fan!) and is looking forward to working with the Club as it seeks to progress through the Football League Pyramid.

City Chairman, Richard Newsome said: "I'm delighted to welcome Mark to the Club, particularly at a time when we are laying the foundations that will, hopefully, set the Club up for success in the long term. Mark is a football fan, understands the game but, as importantly, he can help us build relationships with the Winchester public, business community and our local authorities that are so essential if we are to achieve our ambitions of providing an integrated footballing resource for Winchester."
